Arduino: Skimmer
October 31, 2007I built my first “real” arduino project this evening…

This is what is commonly referred to as a magstripe “skimmer” and you may have heard about them in the news. They are mainly used to read the information off credit cards, drivers licenses, etc… They have gotten a bad reputation because 90% of the people that build one use them to steal credit card data, but the devices in-and-of themselves are not inherently evil as long as you are not doing anything wrong with them.
Mine was built to read the data encoded on my drivers license, CTA pass, etc… It read everything (including my credit cards) *except* for the hotel key from my 2007 Blackhat card that I still had laying around. (i think this is due to the hotel cards being made for 3-head readers and this was only a 2-head)
I’m still working on making sense of the format of the data on each card… More to follow…
